To some, The 3 Life Questions™ may seem too esoteric to apply to business or other areas of leadership. But in last month’s blog post, I invited readers to consider the leadership wisdom of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Let’s dive into the connection between leadership and The 3 Life Questions a bit further.
Consider this: leadership is all about rallying others to a cause that is larger than any one individual. And it is in and through relationships that the opportunity to give and receive love exists (Life Question #1).
By giving and receiving love, in turn, we become and manifest our highest possible self (Life Question #2). Giving and receiving love can take many forms and includes one’s relationship with oneself, another person (spouse, significant other, children, friends, family members, etc.), and (for those who believe this) one’s creator, higher power, or universal consciousness.
Finally, Life Question #3 focuses on impact. Note that this Question is not concerned with what one “gets” from life, but what one contributes. It is in the same vein as Victor Frankl’s assertion that the right question – when one seeks meaning in life – does not ask what one should expect from life, but rather what life is asking of each of us in every moment.
For leaders, the challenge is to recognize the importance of The 3 Life Questions for everyone connected to the organization or enterprise, and to develop mechanisms through which the organization delivers “Yes!” experiences to all its stakeholders. Such organizations provide, rather than detract from, meaning.
