Lessons from The Road 49: Navigating the Gap

There’s a quiet tension many of us carry that exists inside the space between the life we’ve lived, the person we’ve become, and the version of ourselves we’re still stepping into.

This gap can feel unsettling. But it’s also sacred.
It’s the stretch of becoming.

So often, high achievers hold tight to past versions of themselves—the role they played, the identity they built, the story they told. At the same time, there’s a sense that who they are today isn’t the full picture either. And who each of us is becoming? That part’s still unfolding.

This is the gift of self-reflection: we begin to see that growth is not a straight line—it’s a dance among these three selves.

This week, try this simple reflection:

  • What part of your past self are you still trying to protect or prove?
  • What feels most true about who you are right now?
  • What qualities or values are trying to emerge in the “next you”?

Living authentically means accepting the tension between these three selves—and allowing them to inform (but not define) the path forward.

Growth is messy. That’s OK. Because it’s also deeply sacred.
