Lessons from The Road 37: Managing Your Energy

For most of my life, I thought success meant managing my time well. Getting more done in less time. Maximizing efficiency. Crushing to-do lists.

But over time, I came to realize something surprising: I could be on top of my schedule and still feel drained, disconnected, and discontent.

That’s when I started shifting the focus—from time management to energy management.

Think about it: what’s the point of having free time if you’re too exhausted, resentful, or uninspired to enjoy it?

Many of the high-performing leaders I coach have incredible calendars… but depleted souls. They’ve mastered productivity, but feel increasingly distant from their True Self. They have influence, but struggle to feel genuinely connected to others. They’ve built wealth, but wonder why they still feel empty.

This brings us back to Life Question #1: “Am I living authentically, from my True Self?”

When the answer is “no,” you often feel it in your body and your spirit—fatigue that doesn’t go away with sleep, motivation that evaporates after the meeting ends, and a gnawing question that whispers: “Is this really it?”

Answering “yes” to The 3 Life Questions requires more than efficient scheduling—it requires protecting, restoring, and aligning your life energy.

So where does your energy go?

Energy leaks happen when:

  • You’re saying “yes” to things your True Self would never agree to.
  • You’re suppressing your real emotions just to “keep the peace.”
  • You’re stuck in roles or routines that no longer fit.

And energy is restored when:

  • You create space to connect with what brings you alive.
  • You honor your natural rhythms (instead of always pushing against them).
  • You move in alignment with your core values.

Your Challenge This Week:

Do a personal energy audit. At the end of each day, jot down two things:

  1. What drained me today?
  2. What energized me?

Then ask: What’s one small shift I could make to protect or restore my energy tomorrow?

Over time, small shifts like these can help you reconnect with the deeper vitality you already carry within.
