Lessons from The Road 35: Permission to Evolve

Change can be uncomfortable—not because we’re afraid of growth, but because we’ve built so much around who we have come to know ourselves to be. A reputation. A network. A business. An identity. It can get very comfortable.

Letting go of the life you’ve outgrown can feel like betrayal—of the work, of the people, of the persona.

But here’s the truth: growth is not betrayal. It’s evolution.

So many of us cling to careers, lifestyles, and even relationships that once served us, because we’re afraid of disappointing others—or appearing ungrateful. But when your inner self is whispering (or shouting), “This isn’t it anymore,” it’s not a flaw. It’s an invitation.

It’s your True Self calling you to live the next version of your life.

This brings us back to Life Question #1: “Am I living authentically, from my True Self?”

Authenticity isn’t static. You’re not meant to stay the same. The version of you that climbed the ladder may not be the same person who wants to stay on it. And that’s OK.

If you feel the tension between your current life and your evolving self, that’s not failure—it’s aliveness. It means you’re listening.

So how do you begin the process of letting go?

Start with permission. Give yourself permission to question. To want something new. To let go of something that used to fit but now feels constricting, inauthentic.

Then take an honest inventory:

  • Which parts of my life energize me?
  • Which parts drain me?
  • Where am I pretending?
  • What have I kept only because I’m afraid to lose face?

These questions aren’t meant to produce immediate answers. They’re meant to stir something deeper—to begin the process of realignment.

Your Challenge This Week:

Take 10 minutes to journal on this question:
“What am I holding onto that I’ve outgrown?”
Be honest. Be compassionate. Let the answers emerge without judgment.

You’re not starting over. You’re starting truer.
